First National Symposium on Smart Composite Materials & Additive Manufacturing
From November 7-9, 2025, the First National Symposium on Smart Composite Materials & Additive Manufacturing was grandly held at Southern University of Science and Technology. Co-sponsored by the China Composites Society (CCS), the Composite Materials Additive Manufacturing Committee of CCS, and the Smart Composite Materials Branch of CCS, and jointly organized by the School of Automation and Intelligent Manufacturing at Southern University of Science and Technology, the International Center for Applied Mechanics at Harbin Institute of Technology, the Smart Composite Materials Committee of the Chinese Mainland Chapter of SAMPE (Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering), and the Guangzhou Future Additive Manufacturing Research Institute, this event brought together nearly 200 experts and scholars from over 40 universities, research institutions, and application units across China to explore technological frontiers and map out new blueprints for the field's development.
Professor Leng Jinsong, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and from Harbin Institute of Technology, Professor Lv Jian, a member of the French National Academy of Technical Sciences and Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at City University of Hong Kong, and Professor Ye Lin, a member of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering and Chair Professor at Southern University of Science and Technology, were invited to attend the opening ceremony. The ceremony was co-hosted by Research Fellow Xiong Yi from Southern University of Science and Technology and Research Fellow Zhang Fenghua from Harbin Institute of Technology.

Professor Zhou Limin, Vice Chairman of the China Composites Society and Chair Professor at Southern University of Science and Technology, stated in his opening remarks that composite materials technology is accelerating its integration with emerging technologies like additive manufacturing and intelligent manufacturing, driving next-generation composite materials toward high performance, multi-functionality, and intelligence while injecting powerful momentum for their large-scale industrial application. Focusing on the emerging frontier direction of "smart composite materials and additive manufacturing," this symposium represents the first national-level thematic academic conference in this field, marking an important milestone.

Professor Liu Yanju, Director of the Smart Composite Materials Branch of the China Composites Society and a national-level high-caliber talent from Harbin Institute of Technology, noted in her address that the integration of composite materials (as important representatives of advanced materials) with artificial intelligence will strongly promote innovation in material research and development, design optimization, and manufacturing processes. In the future, the Smart Composite Materials Branch and the Additive Manufacturing Committee will jointly organize more academic and industrial activities in this field to support the flourishing development of China's composite materials sector.

The conference featured keynote presentations by Professor Lv Jian (City University of Hong Kong), Professor Zu Lei (Hefei University of Technology), Professor Zhang Xuexi (Harbin Institute of Technology), Professor Guo Chuanfei (Southern University of Science and Technology), Professor Tian Xiaoyong (Xi'an Jiaotong University), Professor Ye Hongling (Beijing University of Technology), and Professor Ge Qi (Southern University of Science and Technology).
Conference Keynote Presentations
During the event, the annual work meetings of the Smart Composite Materials Branch and the Composite Materials Additive Manufacturing Committee of the China Composites Society were also held, reviewing previous work and deploying key tasks and work plans for the next phase.

The symposium organized six thematic sub-forums covering "Composite Materials Additive Manufacturing Processes & Equipment," "Composite Materials Additive Manufacturing Structural Design," "Advanced Composite Materials Additive Manufacturing," "Smart Composite Materials & Structures," "Composite Materials Intelligence & Intelligent Manufacturing," and "Electromagnetic Functional Composite Materials Structures." On the afternoon of the 8th, more than 50 young and middle-aged experts and scholars from across the country shared their latest research findings in these sub-forums, delving into cutting-edge developments in the field of smart composite materials and additive manufacturing.
